WHAT IS A PHOTOCHROM PRINT?

THE Photochrom process - popular at the turn of the century for printing postcards - was used to create a colour print from a black and white photo negative, using between four and fourteen lithograph stones, made from rocklike substances to colorize the print with several different inks.

The process was most popular in the 1890s, when colour photography was first being developed but commercially impractical. Photochrom was developed in Zürich, hence its proper name being spelled without the final 'e,' and was brought to popularity by the Detroit Photographic company.

Nostalgic Essence...

The process typifies the look and feel of early postcard pictures. Not noted for high resolution generally therefore it nevertheless captures a certain nostalgic essence of the periods depicted and a little inherent graininess and contrast is part of the look and charm of such prints.

Luckily today, photo quality inkjet printers can capture quite faithfully the look of the originals, particularly with the large file size and resolution of the Master Digital Files supplied by Collectaprint in particular.

Start Making Cash...

All you have to do is simply load one of the supplied files into your computer, then using your photo editing programme select a print size to suit you and your printer - the image files will reduce quite happily to 300 dpi at 12 x 10 inches approx, or smaller if you have a standard size printer. Then print them using a good photo quality paper - and start making cash!
